Local Chapter Activities – A report

  1. Minaxi Lalit award: The prestigious all Gujarat MINAXILALIT SCENCE TEST-2015 for the UG and PG ( BSc and MSc-MPhil) students was conducted by Gujarat Science Academy, on Sunday 18th  Jan 2015 at 11:00am to 12:15pm. It is matter of pride that maximum numbers of students are always appearing from the Vallabh Vidyanagar center. This year also about 900 students appeared for the examination.
  2. Physics Essay Competition : Organized by CSC, GSA (VVN) and IAPT July 4,2015
A joint program of physics essay competition was organized by CSC (SPU), GSA (VVN) and Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT – Gujarat region) for higher secondary and college students, on July 4, 2015. The year 2015 is being observed as international year of light and light based technologies in short IYL – 2015. The program arranged at CSC on July 4th was actually an interactive question-answer session on the theme of ‘light in our lives, in physics and in technologies’. Participating students from schools and colleges in Anand and V V Nagar were asked to bring an essay written by them on the above topic. About 45 students and a few teachers attended the program, while almost all students brought their essays. Prof. K.N. Joshipura gave a ppt-Talk on the theme of light and also conducted a question-answer session. There was a very good response from all the participants, particularly since in their daily routine, students are busy with tuitions and examinations and they never get opportunity to satisfy their curiosity. The essay entries received were passed on to the expert Dr. Tarun Trivedi of Bhavan’s college Dakor. We found unfortunately that there is ‘copy-and-paste’ tendency i.e. the students simply adopt and use the material from the internet sources like Google, and originality is lacking. However, after assessment, 15 entries were selected for encouraging the students to go for the National Competition on Essay Writing in Physics NCEWP, organized by the IAPT on the same topic. The top 5 entries amongst them were selected for awarding prizes. The prize distribution was held on July 29, as a part of the meeting of Principals and physics teachers of CVM institutions. The prizes were given away by Dr. Shantibhai G. Patel, the first Hon. Director of the CSC and retired professor of physics, SPU. The toper students who received prizes were from RPTP higher secondary science complex, V and C Patel school, I. B. Patel English School of Vidyanagar, and D. N. High school of Anand. The selected 15 students were asked to modify and edit their essays and final entries were submitted to NCEWP-2015. Thus organizing a joint program by CSC, GSA and IAPT was a successful experiment.
Finally, it may also be noted that CSC-SPU is a coordinating centre for IAPT voluntary examination for the Schools in Anand and V V Nagar. The examinations, called National Science Examinations conducted for higher secondary students are in the subject of physics, chemistry, biology and astronomy while junior science Olympiad test is conducted for 10th standard students.
  3. Dr Vikram Sarabhai Vaktrutva spardha: Jointly organized with Sanskar Mandal and CSC on 31st December, 2015

A Science elocution competition for students of 9th 10th 11th is being organized since last 35 years. The topic of competition this year was INDIA IN DIGITAL AND MOBILE-PHONE AGE; IS IT A BOON OR A BANE?  વક્તૃત્વ સ્પર્ધા નો વિષય:- ડિજીટલ અને મોબાઇલ-ફોનના યુગમાં ભારત; લાભદાયી કે હાનિકારક ?! Two participants each from 18 schools alongwith their teachers participated in this whole day event. The event started with written quiz, hands on experimentation session, visit to CSC Lunch followed by oral presentations. About 100 students from nearby schools were among the audience during presentations
